Dacht ik even een leuke 'Human Interest' story over Google te lezen. Niks dus. Ging het uitsluitend over clicks en geld natuurlijk: 2 miljoen dollar per uur halen ze daar uit hun clicks. Bij stroomuitval verliest Google geld. De mensen kunnen niet surfen noch clicken. En dat slecht weer goed is voor business....Tja.

Milieubewuste studentjes

OBERLIN, Ohio — Lucas Brown, a junior at Oberlin College here, was still wet from the shower the other morning as he entered his score on the neon green message board next to the bathroom sink: Three minutes, according to the plastic hourglass timer inside the shower. Two minutes faster than the morning before. One minute faster than two of his housemates.

Over de Groenen en de Honger

De voedselprijzen stijgen, maar grootschalige landbouw en genetisch gemanipuleerde rijst blijven uit den boze. In de NYTimes van vandaag kun je een interessante discussie over honger en de Groenen vinden. Een zekere Dr. Borlaug, die zich er al jaren mee bezighoudt geeft de milieu-lobby een behoorlijke veeg uit de pan: "Some of the environmental lobbyists of the Western nations are the salt of the earth, but many of them are elitists. They’ve never experienced the physical sensation of hunger. They do their lobbying from comfortable office suites in Washington or Brussels. If they lived just one month amid the misery of the developing world, as I have for fifty years, they’d be crying out for tractors and fertilizer and irrigation canals and be outraged that fashionable elitists back home were trying to deny them these things."
Met meer geld en genetische manipulatie van rijstsoorten had het huidige probleem voorkomen kunnen worden. Bijvoorbeeld de 'brown plant hopper' alleen al is verantwoordelijk voor een groot deel van de slechte opbrengsten en de ontstane tekorten.
